Homeowner shot in lower body during attempted robbery

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A homeowner was shot following an attempted robbery in a northeast Richland County neighborhood, according to the sheriff's department.

Richland County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Lt. Curtis Wilson says the incident happened just shortly before 5 p.m. at the 1400 block of Oak Crest Drive.

Wilson says the homeowner came back to his residence and was approached by a black man wearing all black.

The suspect, according to Wilson, pulled out a handgun and attempted to rob the homeowner. The homeowner, however, fought back against the would-be robber.

Wilson says the suspect then tried to flee the scene, but fired multiple shots at the victim in his haste to escape.

The victim was struck once in the lower body and treated for non-life threatening injuries at Palmetto Health Richland.
