TONIGHT AT 11: Little DSS oversight in registered home daycares

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Who is making sure your child's home daycare is safe? A WIS investigation discovered a large portion of home daycare centers in South Carolina have minimal oversight from the Department of Social Services.

Home daycare centers are only required to be registered with DSS, which means after a one-page application and a background check are approved and a center opens, DSS does not visit that home unless a complaint is filed.

Investigative reporter PJ Randhawa's investigation into DSS' home daycare regulations started after two Upstate infants died within six months of each other in centers this year. Three mothers share their emotional stories with WIS about their journeys after they thought they did everything possible to ensure they were leaving their children with responsible, DSS-regulated home daycare providers.

In this two-part investigation, find out what you need to know before leaving your children with a home daycare provider tonight and Wednesday at 11 p.m.
