GASTON, SC (WIS) -

The Gaston Pre-Majors All-Star team likes throwing its State Championship trophy around. Team members have faith in their teammates' athletic abilities.

"It's the easiest team in the world to coach," Coach Jason Smith said. "They all know what each other is going to do. Every one of these kids grew up together. Whether they played against each other or played together."

The team beat North Charleston for a chance to represent South Carolina in the World Series in Chipley, FL this weekend.  It's the first time that a team from Gaston has earned the honor.

"It's very huge, especially for the community," right-fielder Devin Kirby said. "We've never had anything like this."

"It's something we've worked for since we were growing up," utility player Jackson Lucas said. "Coming from a small town, it doesn't normally happen here. We just finally got recognition."

"It just means a lot to help be a part of something when we win," said second-baseman James Reed. "It felt like we'd done something that we'll only do once in a lifetime and that's really special. It's a special team. It comes around only once in a while for a town like this."

"It's an experience you can always tell everybody about," Smith said. "A handful of people in the world get to go."

"We'd really appreciate it," said  first baseman Joseph Sightler.

Update: The team placed 7th in the World Series, but won the Sportsmanship Award. The young men will be recognized August 5th at the Gaston National Night Out Block Party.
