SCANG conducting exercise over Columbia July 23 - wistv.com - Columbia, South Carolina

If you see something strange in the air...

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Don't be alarmed if you see fighter jets escorting a single-engine plane over the Columbia and Florence areas today.

It's part of a routine exercise.

Fighter jets assigned to The South Carolina Air National Guard's 169th Fighter Wing might be seen escorting a single-engine aircraft belonging to the South Carolina Civil Air Patrol between 10-11 a.m.

Carefully planned and closely controlled, this exercise has been coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration to ensure the rapid response capability associated with the SCANG's Aerospace Control Alert mission. Most of the flying activity will not be visible from the ground.

The McEntire unit is a component of the strategic force that is always ready to respond to airborne threats over the United States and is part of North American Aerospace Defense Command's Operation Noble Eagle, which was initiated after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
