CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A California packing company announced a voluntary recall of certain lots of whole peaches, nectarines, plums and pluots that may have been sold in Costco, Sam's Club and Trader Joe's locations.

The fruit, packaged from June 1 through July 12, may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism commonly referred to as Listeria.

The Wawona Packing Company of Cutler, California, says no illnesses have been linked to the recalled produce, but is issuing the recall nationwide because the products were shipped directly to retailers and wholesalers who resell the products, making it difficult to identify specific customers.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and those with weakened immune systems.

In healthy individuals, symptoms are generally short-term and include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recall includes both white and yellow peaches, white and yellow nectarines, plums and pluots. A pluot is a hybrid fruit of a plum and apricot.

Customers who believe they may have purchased affected products should not consume them and should discard them. Customers who have questions about whether fruit they have purchased may be part of the recall should contact Wawona Packing at (888) 222-9912, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. or visit www.wawonapacking.com for more information.

Customers may download the full recall information, including photos of affected packaging, at this link: http://www.wawonapacking.com/VoluntaryRecall-07192014.pdf
