Deadly house fire cause likely to go undetermined, coroner says

The Fairfield County Coroner's Office says a fatal house fire in Winnsboro was an accident, but the exact cause will likely go undetermined due to the extent of the damage.

Diana Wood, 53, and her three dogs were killed in the fire. Her husband, Brad, however managed to escape the blaze that engulfed the home on Great North Road near Lake Wateree on Friday night.

Neighbors around the community saw the fire and tried their best to help.

"I was originally hoping that it might be something in the woods, maybe just like a forest fire or something," one neighbor said. "So, I jumped in my truck and I started heading that way."

Fire investigators say the couple awoke to the house fire. Brad Wood escaped the fire from a bathroom window thinking his wife was behind him. Unfortunately, Diana Wood was found by authorities inside the home not far from their pets.

The Woods, according to neighbors, moved in months ago and were building friendships.

Brad Wood was immediately transported to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta to receive treatment. Since then, the man has been moved from the burn center to a regular hospital,   Fairfield County Coroner Barkley Ramsey said.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office are still investigating.
