Year off motivating former Cav Mitchell

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A former Darton State basketball star is ready to get back on the court after a year away from the game.

Michelle Mitchell was an junior college All-American honorable mention in 2012 for the Lady Cavaliers. She says a year off has motivated her to get back to basketball.

Mitchell signed with Troy University after her Darton State career, but left the Trojans program before ever suiting up. She says it just wasn't the right fit.

Since then, Mitchell has stayed on the court, fueling her fire for the game.

"Ever since I left Troy, I've just been working out, getting in the gym, staying in shape, working with the kids, and staying motivated," she says. "It just makes me feel like I'm ready to get back out there and play."

Mitchell says watching others play has been tough, but it has only strengthened her drive to play.

She verbally committed to Albany State in January, but changed her mind and signed with Columbus State in February.

"It just seemed to be a better fit for me to be in Columbus and surround myself with things academically," she says.

Mitchell will join three other former Lady Cavs at Columbus State, something she feels will help ease the transition.
