ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Darton State's Shanea Armbrister had a phenomenal freshman season in Albany.

She averaged nearly 19 points and eight rebounds per game en route to NJCAA first-team All-American honors.

When she returns for her sophomore season, she feels she'll be a better player thanks to some international experience.

Armbrister was one of 12 players for the Bahamas senior national basketball team that finished 5th in the Caribbean Basketball Championship this summer.

She calls it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

"I was kind of hesitant, saying I don't know if it's going to be a good thing for me being in college and everything and not wanting to get hurt," she says. "But it was amazing. I can't even explain it. Wearing your country's name on your chest is just a privilege."

The 6'2 Nassau native led the team in minutes played and was second in scoring with 15.8 points per game.

Armbrister will likely be one of the most sought after juco players this recruiting season, and she says the international experience has made her a better play.

"Coming back here, I feel like I am stronger in the paint. I know how to get open with pressure on me," she says. "It added a little bit more to my game. Whether it's mentally or physically, I feel like the competition pushed me."

She says she hopes to continue to play for her national team in the future.
