Traffic snarled but still manageable for fans at Beyonce, Jay-Z concert

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Traffic was snarled, but manageable for fans who traveled to see Beyonce and Jay-Z in concert Tuesday night.

There was concern that fans would have a hard time finding a parking spot at the event in downtown Atlanta.

For the first time since construction started on the new Atlanta Falcons stadium, the Georgia Dome hosted a major, sold-out concert with more than 50,000 fans in attendance.

"Well, this is my first time to experience all of the construction," Jessica Ledford said.  "But, they do a good job of explaining it through their website. We didn't have any problems getting here. We planned ahead."

Construction on the new stadium has wiped out the entire southern part of the Georgia Dome where fans used to park in the orange, brown, silver and purple lots. That construction means 1,500 parking spots are gone.

"One of the concerns with the new stadium construction is that a lot of people haven't been downtown recently and haven't seen the street and lane closures and diversions in the downtown area now," said Capt. Ken Skinner, with the Georgia World Congress Center Police Department.

Some fans had trouble with parking and the traffic before the concert.

"It is ridiculous," Sheldon Pillow said. "There are 1,500 parking spots that are gone. So I actually had to park at a friend's house down the street. It was crazy getting in."

Skinner urged concertgoers to take MARTA and expected traffic to be heavy because of the new changes to the area from the construction of the new stadium. MARTA trains operated on a special event service to accommodate the increase in ridership.

"Unfortunately, this is our reality for the next three years," Skinner said. "I think it will be a challenge for events moving forward with that many parking spots gone. Parking will be a premium and when you can't park people that makes traffic even heavier."
