Child blamed for fire that displaced 14 in Charlotte

Charlotte firefighters say a four-year-old child is to blame for a fire that displaced 14 people in Mecklenburg County, including two families.

The fire happened just before midnight Saturday on Bellefonte Drive.

Officials say most of the damage was on the second floor and left a gaping hole in the back of the complex and the roof.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Patricia Nash, the child's mother, says she has nothing left but questions.

"I want to know what made you pick up this lighter and play with it, you know that's wrong. I don't think he understands because he was just playing," Nash said.

The mother of four says the family was asleep when her four-year-old grabbed a lighter and started playing with it. Nash says he got scared and dropped the lighter, starting the fire.

"I'm trying not to be mad because I lost everything I own," Nash said.

Nash hopes others will learn from her mistake.

"Talk to your kids. Let them know that this can be the result of playing with lighters," Nash said.

Damage is estimated at $150,000.

Nash says her family has nothing left but the clothes on their backs. If you'd like to help out, email us at
