Don't blame the Polar Vortex for cooler temps next week

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

There's a lot of talk about the weather turning much cooler next week in the middle part of the country. And we'll even feel some of that cooling later in the week. But whatever you do, don't blame the Polar Vortex.

The Polar Vortex is a low that's centered around the pole (actually around both the north and south pole, but for the sake of this discussion we'll focus on the north pole). This low, and its accompanying circulation, reside well above the surface – several thousand to tens of thousands of feet up. And that's it. The Polar Vortex does not migrate from the north pole down into the United States. It stays around the north pole.

So why the colder than normal air next week? The jet stream will kink a lot - which is a bit unusual for this time of year. As it kinks, warmer air will run up the west coast and colder air will spill down into the central United States.
