MARTINEZ, GA (WFXG) -
A Columbia County family is searching for a bone marrow donor for their 5-year-old son who has a rare disease.
Alex Moore was recently diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a disease that destroys his bone marrow. This disease only affects one or two people per million in the United States each year.
Alex's father, Rev. Matthew Moore, says one moment changed his son's life forever.
"One problem can change your life forever, so you just don't know what's going to happen. Ours changed in one doctor's visit," he says.
Alex went to the doctor complaining of a sore throat and fever. But after the medicine he was given didn't work, Alex went back to the doctor.
"I remember the doctor's coming in and taking more blood, and taking more blood," Moore says.
On June 5th, Alex was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, and his father says he was in shock.
"It's got to be something else, it can't be this," says Moore.
Family members have been tested, but cannot donate because they don't match all the markers.
The National Bone Marrow Registry is sending a team to conduct a bone marrow donor test drive in the Family Life Center at Trinity Baptist Church in Martinez, where Alex's father, Matthew Moore, is the pastor.
Jimi Waters is the Children's Director at Trinity Baptist Church and says she's amazed at how the church community and the CSRA have come together to help Alex.
"It's lighting a fire, and it's awesome," Waters says.
"We've been here six months and this church has proven it's more than just a congregation. They've treated us like family," Moore says.
Rev. Moore says this drive means more than just hope for Alex.
"Through this drive, even if we don't find Alex's match through this bone marrow drive, there is another family somewhere praying for an answer. And maybe through this drive, through our community, we can help somebody else, be the answer to their prayer," he says.
The team will be there from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. The church is located at 4594 Columbia Road.
Alex's blood type is O+. Anyone between ages of 18 and 44 may be tested, including people with other blood types whose test results will be placed on the National Bone Marrow Registry. Testing only requires a swab inside the mouth.
For more information or directions to the church, call 706-863-1222.
Members of the Trinity Baptist Church have also set up a Facebook page for Alex to help show support. If you aren't able to make it out to the bone marrow drive, there will be a benefit concert for Alex on July 26 in Appling, GA and tickets can be purchased at the Trinity Baptist Church.
