A bridge that crosses over Interstate 26 in Lexington County will be closed as part of the ongoing effort to widen the roadway southeast of Columbia.

SCDOT officials say the Old Wire Road Bridge in Calhoun County will be closed for a maximum of 60 days so contractors can raise and rehabilitate the structure. The closure is tentatively scheduled for July 14.

An approximately eight mile detour will be in place during the closure. Drivers will see signs and message boards along the detour route.

The 10-mile widening project is adding one lane in each direction from I-77 to the Old Sandy Run Road exit. Construction is scheduled to be completed in July, 2015.

For more information on the project, the public may contact SCDOT Resident Construction Engineer David Rogers at (803) 254-1007 or visit this website: http://www.scdot.org/inside/I-26_Wide/i26_Widening.aspx
