Midlands man wins lottery on his birthday

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

It was a very happy birthday for a Columbia man, who celebrated with a $300,000 lottery win.

Five numbers he picked at random – 2, 12, 30, 31, and 32 – won him the cash in Monday's South Carolina Education Lottery Palmetto Cash 5 drawing.

"I was sitting on the couch watching the live drawing on television," said the winner, who did not wish to be identified. "When I saw the numbers, I knew it couldn't be real."

The winner says watching the televised drawing is a ritual he and his wife share, but when his winning numbers were pulled his wife was in another room and missed it. 

As of this report, he had not told her that he won yet.

"I didn't want to tell her and look like a fool if it wasn't real," he said.

He's already anticipating his wife's reaction. "She'll either pass out or think I'm lying," he said.

For selling the winning ticket, Sav A Ton Truck Stop in Columbia received a commission of $3,000.

The odds of winning $300,000 are 1 in 1,606,214.
