TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -
A Savannah man's fight for a nude friendly beach on Tybee
Island is getting some sand kicked in its face.
The man behind the plan has even given Tybee officials a
suggestion for a possible location for a clothing optional beach, designing a
quarter mile on the northern most tip of North Beach.
While the Island doesn't seem to be taking his petition and
request very seriously, he's not giving up.
It's been almost a month since the petition was started, and
it's close to 900 signatures strong, but the biggest argument against the idea
of a nude friendly beach anywhere on Tybee Island is the idea that it's not
"It is family friendly," said Shawn Williams. "If you look
at haulover Beach, north of Miami, family friendly all the way. The nude
Williams has stocked up on all kinds of literature since he
started his petition for a nude friendly beach on Tybee Island. He has a Facebook
page, brochures and the Naturist's Code of Family of Values.
"This is critical information in helping me fight for a nude
portion of the beach," he said.
However, not everyone is keen on the idea.
"It has no chance of happening as long as I'm mayor," said
Tybee Island Mayor Jason Buelterman. "That will not happen on Tybee for as long
as I am mayor of this community. We appreciate him taking an active interest in
this and his petition, but we are a family friendly beach, and we plan on
keeping it that way."
"Well, that is just the typical political statement," said
Buelterman doesn't seem to be budging on his
stance, but Williams believes his petition holds real power with 861
signatures, and it's beginning to grow again.
"I don't know what the threshold is, but we
are not going to consider," said Buelterman. "I'm happy to talk to him, but my
response is real simple. It is not going to happen."
"Eventually he will get bugged by it," said
Williams. "Eventually, with enough pushing."
Williams has said all along, this is about
freedom and personal rights, and he has contacted groups from across the country
to help him get a nude beach on Tybee.
