Columbia continues to promote wellness in fight against childhood obesity

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The fight to end childhood obesity has been one that Columbia has taken quite seriously and many have taken notice of the city's ongoing effort.

Officials said the recognition came after Columbia increased access to healthy foods for kids while promoting options for physical activity.

Many children have taken parts in activities at places like Jeep Rogers YMCA here on Lake Carolina and other recreational facilities. In fact, the Rogers Family YMCA say they try to keep physical activity involved, whether it's indoors or outdoors, in daily planning for hundreds of kids that come to camp each day.

Wellness experts believe it's important for kids to stay moving during the summer, but it doesn't take going to a camp to keep your kids active. They say even a simple walk with your kids can do a world of good.

"Just play," YMCA Wellness Coordinator J'aimee Mechling said. "I mean you can turn anything into play time. In my backyard at any given time, you'll see a soccer net, baseball gloves, two kids on a swing, a Slip n' Slide. I mean just play. Take them outdoors. It's hot. I know that. Take them out. Try to get a little activity in. Any kind of movement, anything. Just keep them moving. Don't let them sit in front of a DS or in front of Cartoon Network all day long. Get them outside and get them moving."

While staying active is important, experts say it is very important for children to make sure they have plenty of fluids on hand. Staying hydrated is a very important thing as temperatures are expected to continue to rise in the Carolinas.
