South Carolina State president gets $50,000 bonus

Posted: Updated:

South Carolina State University President Thomas Elzey has been given a $50,000 bonus that is in his contract if he gets a satisfactory evaluation.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports that university trustees voted 8-1 last month on a satisfactory evaluation for Elzey is his first year.

Trustee Tony Grant cast the only vote against the evaluation. He says there is no money in the school's budget to give Elzey a $50,000 bonus.

According to Sonja Bennett, Vice President of the Division of External Affairs and Communication at SC State, Elzey's bonus comes from the SCSU Advancement Foundation along with a portion of his annual salary. Bennett also noted that the annuity is private money and is not school or state funding meaning it does not affect the school's bottom line whatsoever.

Trustee Bob Waldrep, whose term ended in June, voted for the evaluation and said the bonus never entered his mind.

Elzey makes about $300,000 a year in salary.

South Carolina State recently asked the state for a $6 million loan. Elzey has vowed to do whatever it takes to straighten out the university's finances.
