COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

South Carolina public safety officials say roadway deaths were down slightly from last year during the long Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The state's Public Safety Department says eight people were killed on South Carolina's roads during a 78-hour period from Thursday at 6 p.m. to Sunday at midnight.

That figure is two less than the same period last year where 10 people were killed.

Public safety officials also say traffic deaths in general are slightly less than last year so far with only 366 deaths in 2014 versus 373 deaths in 2013.
