Sumter Police in search of cigarette thief

The Sumter Police Department is looking for the community's assistance in identifying a man who allegedly broke into at least three businesses to steal cartons of cigarettes.

On June 23, the suspect reportedly broke into a store on East Charlotte Avenue and stole 60 packs of Newport 100s before 1:45 a.m.

The largest amount of cigarettes stolen happened on June 29 shortly after 10:45 p.m., according to Tonyia McGirt, at a store on Boulevard Road.  At that business, another attempted break-in was made on June 30 between 10:30 p.m. and 1:45 a.m. A box containing cartons of Newport cigarettes were reported as stolen.

Authorities say the most recent incident took place on June 30 between 10 p.m. and 11:50 p.m. at a store on East Liberty Street. There, the suspect is said to have stolen 12 cartons of Newport cigarettes.

Sumter Police said the man was wearing a tan shirt with dark pants, a blue cap and tan-colored boots during another incident. Authorities believe he may have been accompanied by another man wearing dark-colored shorts, a black and white shirt with a pair of shoes that appears to be Keds.

Anyone with information regarding the identities or whereabouts of persons involved in these incidents is urged to call the Sumter Police Department at 803-436-2700. Citizens may also call CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC (1-888-274-6372).

A cash reward may be available for information leading to an arrest.
