UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Union County deputies said they were called to a Jonesville neighborhood on Monday after a dog on the loose attacked an elderly woman and her Chihuahua, killing the small dog.

Deputies said the 75-year-old victim was in her yard on West Springs Highway with her dog, which was on a leash, when a boxer-pit bull-mix ran into her yard and attacked them.

When officers arrived, they found the dog clutching the smaller dog and the injured woman, according to the sheriff's office report.

The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment and animal control officers came to get the dogs, deputies said. The report stated they were unable to find the Chihuahua after the attack.

Deputies said they called the dog's owner to notify him of the attack and that they took the dog into custody. Animal control is holding the larger dog on a 10-day quarantine.

According to the victim Joyce Rhoden and her family, Munchkin was about 2 years old and tiny, weighing about 3 pounds. They said she was a constant companion of Rhoden's.

Sheriff David Taylor said the dog's owner is out of town on vacation but will be charged with allowing a dog to run at large. He said the dog was being cared for by a family member while the owner was out of town.

Taylor said the case remains under investigation and more charges could be filed.

He said Rhoden faces additional surgery in the days ahead.
