Hurricane Arthur makes landfall at Cape Lookout, NC

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Hurricane Arthur has passed the South Carolina Coast, leaving no threat for Myrtle Beach. At 9 p.m. Thursday, Arthur became a category two hurricane with winds of 100 mph.

Landfall is likely near Morehead City, NC around 11 p.m. Thursday.

The chance for rain and some strong wind gusts will continue into Thursday night. Things will taper off very quickly with most wind and rain totally gone by 11 p.m.

Eastern North Carolina is going to take a major hit, with areas from Morehead City to Cape Lookout and Cape Hatteras likely to see wind gusts over 100 mph. Arthur is forecast to become a category two hurricane off the North Carolina Coast by 2 a.m. Friday..

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Grand Strand for all of Georgetown and Horry Counties. A Hurricane Warning is in place for the coastal waters of Brunswick County through the Outer Banks.

Rip current risk

A high risk for rip currents remain Thursday through Friday evening, according to Meteorologist Marla Branson. Rip currents will be the biggest issue in our area into the Fourth of July holiday. Although Hurricane Arthur is north of Myrtle Beach, the chance of rip currents is still possible. Swimmers and beachgoers will need to take precautions, Branson advises.

Lifeguards are on high alert for rip currents into the weekend.

Rain chances

Light rainfall is set to fall until later Thursday evening. The majority of the rain is out of our area.

Some areas received two-and-a-half inches Thursday. The rains caused road closures in North Myrtle Beach at around 1 p.m. Thursday.

Winds

Light breezes are expected through Thursday night, with a maximum speed of 15 to 20 mph along the Grand Strand.

Arthur was the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season.
