SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies said a Spartanburg mother and father were charged after deputies discovered the couple's 10 children living in unfit conditions.

Deputies were initially called to a home on Old Low Road Friday on afternoon, where they met a 15-year-old girl who told them that her father had twisted her arm while taking away her cell phone, according to incident reports. The girl told deputies she had left her home and ran to a neighbor's house to call 911.

Deputies said they went to the girl's house to search for her parents. Inside the house, deputies said they found a 14-year-old boy with a black eye, a nine-year-old with red bumps and sores on his legs, and a one-year-old girl sleeping in a crib with similar sores and red bumps.

Deputies said the home was stocked with food and had water and power, but said the home had an insect problem. Deputies said the home contained little furniture and that a utility closet and an attic were being used as sleeping areas.

Deputies said the seven male children, between age two and 14, and three female children, ages one to 15, were placed into emergency protective custody.

The parents, Andrej and Natalia Sokil, arrived home as deputies were getting the children packed and preparing to transport them to the Department of Social Services.

Andrej and Natalia Sokil were taken into custody and were each charged with three counts of neglect of a child or helpless person, deputies said.

Seven of the children were taken to DSS and the three children with injuries and sores were taken to the hospital for observation, according to crime reports.

The Sokils were released from the Spartanburg County Detention Center on their own recognizance early Saturday morning.
