WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - One year after she was murdered while working at a Midlands bakery, Kelly Hunnewell will be honored by the company she would have been working for today.
Carolina Cafe is dedicating its new cafe, bakery and commercial kitchen in West Columbia to Hunnewell's memory. The 33-year-old mother of four was murdered in July of 2013 during a robbery attempt where she was working at a Carolina Cafe bakery on Tommy Circle in Columbia.
Carolina Cafe says Hunnewell would have been managing the new baking facility that opening on Sunset Blvd. She was a baker at Carolina Cafe for three years before she was murdered.
"It's particularly poignant because it's the one year anniversary of her death and this new place would have been her kitchen," said Carolina Cafe owners Max and Lauren Schlueter. "She was really looking forward to working here."
Carolina Cafe's original location is at the corner of Pendleton and Sumter Streets in downtown Columbia. The new location is at 2250 Sunset Boulevard.
Troy Stevenson, Lorenzo Young and a 16-year-old were arrested in connection with Hunnewell's murder. All three were charged with murder, kidnapping, attempted armed robbery and various other crimes.
The juvenile, who is related to one of the suspects, will be tried as an adult. Police identified Stevenson and Young as documented gang members.
"Why are they out on the street, first of all? What were they thinking, you know? There's nothing in that bakery. There was absolutely nothing in there. Some stainless steel," said Max.
Hunnewell left behind four small children.
