COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A lawsuit says South Carolina's social services agency failed to protect a 6-year-old girl from a foster child with known behavioral issues.
According to a lawsuit filed against the Department of Social Services, a boy was removed from his mother's home in 2012 and placed in foster care in Richland County. The lawsuit filed last month says DSS knew the boy had severe behavioral problems, had been sexually abused and was HIV-positive.
The lawsuit says the 14-year-old boy sexually assaulted the girl while he was in foster care. Attorneys for the girl say DSS failed to ensure a child with known behavioral issues got appropriate monitoring while in foster care and also didn't immediately tell the girl's mother the boy was HIV-positive.
Agency representatives didn't immediately return messages seeking comment.
