COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Richland County investigators say a man admitted to doing drugs in a car with two other men just shortly before he was wounded by gunfire in a scuffle.
Sheriff's department spokesperson Sgt. Curtis Wilson said deputies responded to a shooting on Faison Drive around 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Once at the scene, Wilson says they found the victim had already been taken to Palmetto Health Richland with a gunshot wound to the upper body. However, the victim's car was still nearby.
Deputies checked the vehicle, Wilson says, and located a gun.
A short time later, deputies located the victim and interviewed him. Wilson says during the interview, the victim told investigators he was doing drugs in the car with two others when he heard a pistol slide.
The victim then said he struggled with the two other men as the gun went off, striking him. Wilson says the two men fled the scene after the gun fired.
The victim, meanwhile, says he attempted to drive himself to the hospital but passed out and crashed into a tree on Faison Road.
Investigators have managed to piece together that the shooting actually happened on Swandale Drive and Torwood Drive.
A description of the two men is not currently available.
