EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Todd McKinney, 48, loves to bowl.

He took that passion to the Special Olympics in New Jersey last week. Now, he returns home with a gold medal.

"It was wonderful," he said with a big smile.

He and his team of Upstate athletes placed first in the bowling competition. Each team member got a gold medal. Tuesday, McKinney returned to the lanes where he always trains to have a bowl with his teammate, David Wolf.

Wolf said he got involved with Special Olympics when he bowled with his cousin who has cerebral palsy. He said being on the same team as McKinney has taught him some important life lessons.

"It's not really about how many strikes he gets or how many spares he gets at the end, he's happy at the end of the day, no matter what," said Wolf. "And I just think we should all look at that and say, 'You know -  hey - I didn't bowl a 300 tonight, but I did what I could. I bowled my best.'"

McKinney has won silver at past national Special Olympic Games.
