GRAY COURT, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Investigators are working to determine what caused an elderly woman's death and what sparked a fire that destroyed her Gray Court home on Monday.

Lt. Judy Stiles with the Laurens County Sheriff's Office said South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and arson investigators were called in to assist with the investigation at the mobile home on SC 101 south at Pleasant View Drive.

Coroner Nick Nichols identified the victim as 78-year-old Willie Ree Booker.

When asked if he thought the fire was suspicious, Nichols said, "At this point, yes. She was a non-smoker is my understanding. She was in the front bedroom … and we need to know the origin, why, how come."

He said they believe Booker was home alone at the time the fire broke out about 8 p.m. He said her daughter also lived with her but was at a church service when the fire started.

Nichols said an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
