SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg police say charges are being filed after two children were found unattended while their parents were passed out from using heroin.

According to Capt. Art Littlejohn, police responded to Creek Ridge Apartments/Hillcrest Commons after a reported overdose early Monday morning.

He said when officers arrived they found a woman and her boyfriend (the children's father) passed out from using the drug.

Officers found an 8-month-old infant and a 20-month-old child lying on the floor unattended, Littlejohn said.

He said the children were taken into emergency protective custody.

The father, 24-year-old Caleb Burgess, was arrested for child endangerment, according to Littlejohn.

Littlejohn said the mother was taken to the hospital for a heroin overdose and charges will be filed against her.

According to the Spartanburg County Detention Center website, on Monday afternoon, the mother, 24-year-old Gina Gaudiano, was booked into the detention center on the charge of neglect of a child.
