PIEDMONT, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Troopers are searching for the driver who crashed into a Piedmont home early Sunday morning and then fled the scene.

The crash happened between 4 and 5:30 a.m. at Gloria Lanton's home on Charterhouse Avenue in the Chesterfield Estates neighborhood.

"Around a quarter to four I walked over to check on my mother and everything was fine," Lanton said. Around 6 a.m. Lanton said she woke up to find strangers in her bedroom. "Firefighters were right there by the bed and they told me someone drove into my house."

Lanton said a neighbor arrived home around 5:30 a.m. and called 911. "(The neighbor) thought we might be dead after he saw the damage," she said.

Lanton said the driver crashed through the wall and into a vacant room right next her 85-year-old mother's bedroom.

"My mother has Alzheimer's and she's very shook up, but I'm so glad she wasn't hurt," Lanton said.

Troopers with the SC Highway Patrol are investigating.

"I just can't believe someone would crash into my home like this and then leave without checking to see if everyone was alright," Lanton said.
