A man was arrested early Saturday morning after deputies say he crashed into a mailbox after trying to elude a sheriff's deputy.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said 36-year-old Derrick Sumter was charged with failure to stop for blue lights and sirens, reckless driving, and unlawful carrying of a pistol.

A sheriff's deputy was on patrol when he saw Sumter on a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed on Clemson road, Lott said.

Lott said after failing to stop for the deputy, Sumter attempted to elude the deputy and lost control and crashed.

Sumter suffered non-life threatening injuries to his lower body and was transported to Providence North East Hospital.

Lott said that Sumter did not have a concealed weapons permit for a handgun found in his possession.

Sumter has since been transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
