SUMTER, SC (WIS) -

Police in Sumter are asking the community for information to help solve a string of shootings in the city.

Sumter Police say at least eight shootings in the South Sumter area appear to be connected. Detectives suspect the incidents are related to criminal activity.

Police say victims and witnesses are not cooperating with investigators, making solving the crimes difficult.

In some of the incidents, police say innocent people have become victims of what investigators describe as "retaliatory acts by individuals involved in disputes over illegal drug activity."

Since January, police have responded to reports of shots fired at the following locations:

  • King Street
  • Harvin Street near Shannon Street
  • Red and White Street near Shannon Street
  • Red and White Street near Penn Street
  • Manning Avenue at Bracey Plaza
  • South Sumter Gym
  • Harrison Street near Shannon
  • Webb Street

If you know anything that can help police find the people responsible and stop these incidents, call Crimestoppers at 1-888-Crime-SC. If you hear gunshots, call 911 immediately and note the location, number of shots, direction in which they were heard and description of people or vehicles seen in the area.
