WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) -

Columbus County residents could soon have an opportunity to weigh in on the idea of re-naming a road after former NFL player Chester McGlockton, who grew up in the county.

County commissioners are expected to set a date for a public hearing during their meeting Monday night.

Whiteville attorney Matt Tedder asked the board in 2012 to rename Fruit Ridge Road after his former high school teammate who went on to play in the NFL for 12 years. McGlockton died in 2011.

Tedder told commissioners McGlockton lived "off of Fruit Ridge Road" for about 15 years, according to meeting minutes.

The board unanimously approved asking the county attorney to work with the Department of Transportation on the request.

Commissioner Amon McKenzie said he has since heard concerns from some residents who live on Fruit Ridge Road. They question the need to rename their road specifically and have complained about the potential cost of changing their addresses, McKenzie said.
