COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Family and friends of Aja Robinson gathered Saturday to remember the hard-working and fun-loving 23-year-old.

On Friday, Aja was shot and killed by 25-year-old Jeremy Mickens in a parking lot in the 3300 block of North Main Street, authorities said. After Mickens shot Aja, he turned the gun on himself.

Aja worked two jobs, helped others when they needed it the most and looked out for her mom and siblings.

"I've never had to bury someone before and I never thought I'd be burying my baby," said Aja's mom, Lisa Robinson. "She's the sweetest, she was my baby. I just want to bring her home with me."

When the news broke about Aja, Robinson's family came from Boston to help with the painstaking task of figuring out how to pay for Aja's funeral service.

"We live hand to mouth," Robinson said. "I have no savings. It saddens me… We are going to have as little as possible, probably just have a cremation."

Aja's grandmother, Sara Finley remembers her granddaughter as sweet, caring and a joy to be around.

Aja used to go over her grandmother's house on the weekends just to visit and catch up.

"I am 70-years-old and this is possibly the hardest thing I have ever gone through in my life and the next hardest thing is going to be getting in that car and leaving my baby girl here," Finley said.

Finley said even though their family might not have much, they made up for it with unconditional love.

"What people need to know is that as a family, we don't have two nickels to rub together but we were millionaires when it came to love," Finley said. "We loved each other. We loved each other, we brought our kids up to love each other, to love other people, to care about other people and she didn't deserve to leave this world this way."

The Columbia Police Department is still investigating the events leading up to the shootings.

The family has set up a gofundme account to help with funeral expenses.
