Animal waste spills from chicken truck in downtown Camden

Posted: Updated:

Camden Police and others are working to clean up after a truck that spilled waste from a chicken plant through parts of downtown on Thursday morning.

Police say the truck was traveling down DeKalb Street and spilled most of its load along the way.

Witnesses say the spill has caused a very bad smell in the downtown area. "We went by just after it happened," said Ella Angstadt. "From Chronicle Independent to Broad Street, hold your breath. When we got home to Elgin you can still smell it on the tires."

The truck was transporting waste from Valley Proteins, which has a local office in Ward, South Carolina.

Crews are working to clean up the area, but have not said when the roadway will be clear and fully sanitized.

DHEC officials have also responded to the incident.

"We were notified of the spill and have a representative on-site to observe the clean up," said spokesperson Jim Beasley. "We want to ensure that the waste is properly cleaned from the roadway and hauled to an approved landfill."

The driver will be charged with not securing the load.
