MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - Grizzlies forward James Johnson went before a judge on Monday and plead not guilty to domestic assault charges.

Johnson's attorney, Leslie Ballin, says this case is no different than any other, that his client is innocent, and he will work to get these charges cleared.

"What a great guy, I mean that without hesitation," said Ballin.

Johnson was arrested over the weekend for domestic assault after he allegedly hit and choked his wife after an altercation leaving Beale Street.

"It's our position that these charges are not founded in fact. We maintain our innocence," added Ballin.

The judge released Johnson on bond with several stipulations, including no contact with his wife.

Outside 201 Poplar, fans stopped Johnson for photos and support following his court appearance.

"I'm always a fan, always a fan, Memphis Grizzlies all day. I won't ever fault nobody for what they do. That's life," said Richard Rich.

Several fans posed for pictures with Johnson.

"I think every man is innocent until proven guilty. There's two sides to every story. So until the truth actually comes out, who's to say," noted another fan.

Still, despite Johnson's celebrity status, Ballin hopes this case is handled like all the others.

"That's all we're asking for is an even playing field. He should not be given anymore consideration of any less consideration just because of what he does for a living," noted Ballin.

Johnson is scheduled in court Friday, June 13. In the meantime, his lawyer asked him not to comment on the charges.

As for the Grizzlies, they are aware of the ongoing investigation but have no comment at this time.
