Seven American veterans lied waiting in funeral homes and coroner's offices to be after being forgotten by their families.
That is, until today.
Army Sgt. Robert A. Eames, Army Sgt. Wade L. Harrington, Army Technical Sgt. 5th Class Marion C. Bomar, Army Specialist 4th Class William A. Ballard, Army Specialist 4th Class John C. Cardenas, Army Private Frederick J. Southernland, and Navy Seaman Eric J. Gerhart were all claimed today by new families thanks to the Missing in America Project.
"We hope in time we will be able to find all those unclaimed veterans who are out there," Stephen Goulet said.
A special ceremony was held today at Fort Jackson National Cemetery honoring the occasion. The seven veterans claimed join 38 other South Carolina veterans who have been laid to rest because of the program. Each member of the Armed Forces claimed by families are inurned in urns made by hand by students from the Department of Juvenile Justice ensuring each veteran has a final resting place.
These six soldiers and one sailor span different generations, but today has a special meaning for Bomar, one of the servicemen given a family today.
According to his service record, Bomar enlisted in 1943 and served until the end of World War II with the 7th Army, which was known for helping liberate France from the Nazis.
