Leading by a stroke entering Thursday's final round, Elgin's Kelli Murphy found victory within reach at Spring Valley Country Club.
The 17-year-old Murphy was determined to win it all after falling short a year ago. The recent Lugoff-Elgin graduate made a strong charge during the round and captured the Women's City Golf Championship.
Murphy gained momentum early and was able to build on it on the back nine of the course. She rolled in a 20-foot plus birdie on the 11th hole to 4-under par on the day and 3-under for the championship.
Murphy pulled away from the field as she neared the final hole. With a great approach on the 15th hole, Murphy put herself in a great position to add to her lead, but she managed to par the hole.
Last year's champion, Lexington's Kathryn Miranda, was also in contention to start the day. However, she struggled to remain within striking distance. A birdie on the 16th hole would help her finish the tournament 8-over par.
Miranda's troubles cleared the way for Murphy as she finished the tournament with a three-day total of 2-under par to win her fourth Women's City Golf Championship.
