Soda drinking still concerns health experts

(NBC News) - Health advocates from around the country were in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, waging a war on soda and other sugary drinks.

Education about the link between sugar and health problems like obesity and diabetes have contributed to Americans cutting back on soda, down 3 percent last year, according to an industry report.

But the government still calls sugary drinks the single largest source of calories in the American diet, and health advocates say that needs to change.

Researchers are considering new deterrents like beverage taxes and coupon bans.

The beverage industry argues their popular drinks aren't to blame for the country's obesity problem.

"Nutritional advice is important, but turning it into regulations often is a really bad idea," said Baylen Linnekin of Keep Food Legal.

The beverage industry argues they've given consumers low and no calorie options, and it's up to consumers to choose them.
