KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

A Bethune man was charged with attempted murder after deputies say he attacked a drinking buddy with a knife.

Sheriff James Matthews says deputies were called to a Bethune home Friday night for a report of a man who had been slashed with a knife during an argument. Matthews says the victim had been drinking with the man accused of attacking him when the argument broke out.

The victim was taken to the hospital where investigators say he received 41 staples to close the wound, which barely missed his carotid artery. He was released.

Matthews says when deputies went to 57-year-old Larry Darnell Johnson's house on Mulberry Drive, he had a knife in his hand and refused to leave the house. Eventually deputies talked him into surrendering.

Johnson was charged with attempted murder and was taken to the Kershaw County Detention Center where he awaits a bond hearing.

Matthews says Johnson's criminal history includes burglary, criminal domestic violence and assault on a police officer.
