CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A 21-year-old says he was stabbed more than a dozen times after trying to stop a man from hitting a woman.

It happened nearly two weeks ago in downtown Charleston.

Desmond Casey said, "I got stabbed 15 times. I have over 100 stitches and I have over 30 staples."

Some would call Desmond Casey a good samaritan or even a hero.

"At the time I kind of felt like it was my job, my duty to kind of step up as the man," said Casey.

Casey says he took a different way home while walking along Coming Street in downtown Charleston.

"Saturday night, Sunday morning after all the bars were closed," said Casey.

He says he saw Chad Stalnaker walking with a woman.

"I would say I was probably like two, three cars away," said Casey.

Stalnaker told police he and his girlfriend were arguing. Casey says it was more.

"I didn't hear them arguing, I just saw the physical part where he was swinging at her. Don't hit no woman," said Casey.

That's when he says stepped in and Charleston police say a fight broke out between the two men and a neighbor from across the street tried to stop it.

Casey said, "After he broke up the fight, Mr. Stalnaker, he ran upstairs."

According to a police report, Stalnaker told police he went in his apartment, got a kitchen knife, jumped from this second floor balcony down to the sidewalk and stabbed Casey three times.

Casey says it was a lot more.

"I was stabbed six times in my face and my mouth; you can see my teeth missing, my tongue cut. Six times in my face, six times in my back and three times in my arm," said Casey.

While the 21-year-old fights to get better, his coworkers at Lee Lee's Hot Kitchen are rallying behind him.

"They was glad I was still alive you know, because this is a blessing, a true blessing you know," said Casey.

Medical bills are piling up for Casey and his co-workers have turned to social media to help cover the costs.

The Facebook page, Love and Support for Desmond Casey now has over 600 likes. It was started shortly after Casey was stabbed.

The 21-year-old was joined by his mother and boss at Lee Lee's Kitchen where he's a dishwasher there.

His co-workers have started a fund to help with his medical bills and so far they have collected over $5,000.

Casey's mother, Sandra Simmons said, "I knew that it was good deed that he done and that's a good thing. Yet this had almost cost him his life."

Trey McCutcheon, Casey's General Manager said, "He did something he didn't have to do and in a situation as horrible as it is, we all talked to Desmond and like he said, everything happens for a reason."

Charleston police arrested 29-year-old Chad Stalnaker and charged him with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Stalnaker is still behind bars.

Casey says he will continue physical therapy for the next six weeks.

On Tuesday, June 3rd 5% of the sales at Lee Lee's Hot Kitchen will be donated to a fund for Casey.
