Boy battling cancer receives big honor

Posted: Updated:

A Midlands boy battling cancer has been named South Carolina's Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Champion.

Twelve-year-old Keldon Hemmingway is one of 52 children in the US to receive this honor.

He was named the champion ambassador because of his courage and amazing attitude while dealing with an inoperable brain tumor.

He's a patient at Palmetto Health Children's Hospital.

Keldon said he wants to help mentor other kids going through a difficult diagnosis and time in their lives.

"I would never just say something and leave," Hemmingway said. "I would actually say this is what you're going to expect.  Such and such and such and such.  And also, you know, not give up.  You have to believe there is a cure or there is faith out there."

In November, Keldon and the other Champion ambassadors will travel to Washington D.C. and Orlando, Florida to share their stories and raise awareness of the vital work taking place in children's hospitals.
