A Midlands solider who will receive the Medal of Honor attended a luncheon with families of fallen soldiers Wednesday.

Cpl. (Ret.) Kyle Carpenter said families who lost loved ones in the war gave so much more than he has and was humbled to be with them.

He also said the support he's had from the community since his injury is incredible.

"Pulling together from the second I got injured, sending me letters of encouragement, support," Carpenter said. "I always tell people every chance I get that I'm here because of people like you are behind me."

Carpenter is the eighth living recipient to be chosen for the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan. Obama plans to give Carpenter his medal during a White House ceremony June 19.

Carpenter was wounded in 2010 while on guard in Afghanistan's Helmand Province. He lost his right eye, among other injuries, and was medically retired last summer due to his wounds.

Carpenter is a native of Fleetwood, Mississippi, and now is a student at the University of South Carolina.
