Historic Columbia named 2014 Blue Star Museum

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Historic Columbia has once again been declared a Blue Star Museum for 2014.

And that means free tours of the historic house museums for active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The Blue Star Museum program offers the free tours at more than 2,000 museums nationwide.

"We have four beautiful properties that operate as Historic House Museums here in Columbia," said Carrie Phillips with Historic Columbia. "You can learn about the history of Richland County, the history of the South, if there is a particular piece of history that you're interested in, say the Civil War or the Antebellum period, or Jim Crow, or reconstruction. We have museums that speak to all of those topics."

Military members can tour the Robert Mills House, Hampton-Preston Mansion, Mann-Simons Site and the newly re-opened Woodrow Wilson Family Home.

Tours start on the hour from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

There are normally not tours on Mondays, but they will be open on Memorial Day.
