Coroner says child's death was from natural cause

Posted: Updated:

The Richland County Coroner says a 2-year-old died from a natural cause and it was not the result of abuse.

Gary Watts said Thursday the 2-year-old was taken to the hospital from the babysitter's North Columbia home on Tuesday. The child later died at the hospital.

Watts said an autopsy and testing revealed the little girl died from complications of E-Coli Sepsis.

Officers were dispatched to an apartment complex on Ripplemeyer Avenue Tuesday morning following an emergency call about an unresponsive child.

"The Coroner does not usually report deaths that are from natural causes," said a statement released by Watts Thursday. "Because of all of the recent coverage on children's deaths and DSS involvement in child death cases, information on this case is being released at the request of the family to show that NO ABUSE of any kind was involved in the death of this child."

"The Coroner asked that all rumors and misinformed conversations stop about this case."
