Two eagle-eyed off-duty Columbia Police officers recognized a man wanted in connection with a Mother's Day weekend murder, according to a department spokeswoman.

Charles James Byrd, 20, has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.

Byrd was arrested Wednesday morning on North Main Street when the two officers who were working off-duty security recognized him and called for back-up.

Byrd is accused of shooting several rounds into a home on Cody Street, killing 24-year-old Marcus A. Kennedy and injuring a female shortly before 1:00 a.m. on May 11.

The suspect was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center to await a bond hearing.

Police investigators are working to identify another possible suspect in this case.
