RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

The completion date for opening all six lanes of traffic on the I-20 widening project in northeast Richland County has been pushed back a month so additional work can be done to the interstate just outside the original project scope.

Crews will now remove and replace the asphalt in a 1.5 mile section of the interstate just west of the initial construction zone.

SCDOT announced Tuesday the westbound portion of I-20 from near the I-77 interchange to a half-mile east of the Two Notch Road exit was showing signs of deterioration and needed replacing.

The additional work has pushed the date for opening all lanes in the widening project from May 24 to June 27.

SCDOT officials said because a contractor was already mobilized on site for the I-20 widening, it was cost efficient to have the company move forward with the additional work.

In addition to replacing the asphalt, the concrete median barrier wall in that section of roadway will be raised to provide a glare shield to improve safety.

Milling on this section of I-20 began in mid-May. There will be intermittent nighttime lane closures. No daytime lane closures are planned.

The I-20 widening project from I-77 to just east of Spears Creek Church Road consists of widening and reconstruction of approximately six miles of the existing 4-lane concrete pavement to six lanes, installation of noise barrier walls, widening of the westbound bridge over Alpine Road and replacement of the eastbound bridge over Alpine Road.

Pending no weather delays, the three travel lanes in each direction along the widening project are scheduled to open to traffic on the morning of June 27. However, work activities on the project will continue after this date. Nighttime lane closures will resume on July 13 and continue nightly until August 15. The additional time is necessary to complete final tasks including asphalt paving, guardrail work, and removal of temporary crossovers that are being used during construction.
