SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) -
A 4-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in the head while at his grandmother's home last week has died, according to the Dorchester County Coroner's Office.
Christopher Nisbett says 4-year-old Jeffery Scott, of North Charleston, was pronounced brain dead Friday, May 16 at 3:45 p.m. His death has been ruled accidental.
According to reports, Summerville police were called out to a home on West Richardson Avenue on May 12 around 4:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a child with a gun shot wound.
The child's grandmother told police she was putting away groceries when she heard a "very loud bang." She then reportedly went outside to find her 4-year-old grandson laying on the ground in front of the house, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head.
Police say the woman carried the victim inside in an attempt to provide aid. Officers arrived to find the injured child and a Taurus .25 handgun in the dining room.
The grandmother told a 911 dispatcher she did no know where her grandson got the gun from.
Officials say Scott live in North Charleston, and was visiting family in Summerville at the time of the accidental shooting.
Scott was flown to MUSC, where he was later pronounced dead.
