Deputies: Child hit in head, killed after playing with rotting tree

CLEVELAND COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A five-year-old was killed when deputies say the child was hit in the head by a rotting tree that fell while two children were playing with it.

According to the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office, the five-year-old was playing with a six-year-old along the 100-block of Kim Drive in Grover on Saturday.

The pair was playing with a rotten tree that was standing upright when the tree fell into another tree.

"The juveniles continued to play with and push onto the tree until it fell from the leaning position and struck the 5-year-old in the head causing internal head and neck injuries," the Sheriff's Office told WBTV.

Emergency crews arrived on scene and transported the child to Cleveland Regional Medical Center where the child later died.

The Sheriff's Office has ruled the incident an accident.
