Storms ravage 2 Missouri towns; at least 1 tornado reported

ORRICK, MO (KCTV) -

Spring weather continued to wreak havoc Saturday with two possible tornadoes ripping through Orrick and Marshall in Missouri.

No serious injuries were reported.

The town of about 900 residents northeast of Kansas City suffered quite a bit of structural damage, including roofs blown off homes and power lines blown down, Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Collin Stosberg said.

Stosberg said late Saturday night that there were no injuries from the storm but that about 80 percent of the city was damaged, including 200 to 300 homes, three churches and a school.

The tornado appeared to touch down in Orrick about 5:45 p.m. The storm hit in Marshall about 7:30 p.m.

After the storm, Chopper5 flew over Orrick and took video of roofs completely ripped off of homes and trees uprooted. A camper was overturned, and a silo was demolished to rubble. The high school also saw damage.

"The school lost its roof, too, so we're working with the district on that, as far school goes on Monday," Stosberg said, adding that the district is forming a plan and deciding if they'll be able to hold school Monday.

Some residents in Orrick said they didn't hear sirens, and they had mere minutes to seek protection once they saw a funnel cloud barreling toward them. Stosberg said it was a combination of efforts from local media and law enforcement that helped them alert those living in the town.

"The local policeman saw the tornado coming. He alerted the fire department, who sounded the sirens, gave a good 10-minute warning, and that's plenty of time to get folks in a safe place," he said.

Residents expressed their relief that no one was injured. Kristy Gass, her four children and their puppy fled to the basement when she caught sight of the funnel cloud.

"We were all huddled up in the very back of our basement," she said. "Glass was flying around. Everything was flying around us down there, and you could hear the house collapse above us."

She and her family have sought refuge with a friend.

A shelter has been set up in Richmond for storm victims. The shelter is at the Eagleton Civic Center, 1015 W. Royle St. The shelter is providing food, water and lodging.

About 7:30 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Saline County in central Missouri. Marshall is located in the center of Saline County.

No significant damage has been reported in Marshall. Barns were destroyed in rural Saline County.

The Salvation Army has volunteers already in Orrick providing food and drinks to those affected by the Ray County tornado.

You can make donations by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY or donating via mail. Designate your check to Orrick, Missouri Tornado care of the Salvation Army, 3637 Broadway, Kansas City, MO 64111.

If you have pictures of the tornadoes or the damage, email them to yourphotos@kctv5.com.
