Feds involved in investigation of 7-year-old's accidental shooting

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

Federal investigators are looking into in the accidental shooting that killed a 7-year-old Lexington County girl at a birthday party in Gaston back in April.

Lexington County Sheriff's Department detectives are working with the ATF and the U.S. Attorney's office to determine if any federal laws were broken when Juliet Lynch was struck by a bullet fragment.

Authorities said a 5-year-old was getting a toy gun from the trunk of a car when he unknowingly grabbed a real gun and opened fire.

Lynch was struck and another child was injured in the incident. She later died at the hospital.

Lexington County officials did not find enough evidence to establish probably cause or that the shooting involved any violations of state law.

We've reached out to the U.S. Attorney's Office to see if charges are being considered. They told us as a matter of policy they do not confirm or deny investigations, but promised if charges are made, they'll be made public.
